ASSORTMENT PLANNING

What makes a STEM toy worth stocking?

Look beyond the label. Review the play loop, setup, instructions and intended user before placing a bulk order.

Start with what the child actually does

Ask what action begins the play, what feedback follows and how the activity develops. Does the toy invite building, observing, predicting, comparing or solving a problem? The STEM label should lead you to a visible activity you can explain to your customer.

Check the intended user and setup

Review the supplied age guidance, small components, instructions and supervision notes. Try the setup with the contents in the box. Identify any additional batteries, tools or materials the customer will need.

Assess repeat play

Can the toy support different constructions, experiments or challenges? Does the included guide help the user move beyond the first activity? A clear play loop can make a product easier to demonstrate in store and explain online.

Buy the information as well as the object

Request component counts, instructions, product dimensions and images that show the play activity. Verify the language options for your market. For a branded pack, approve the claims and instructions alongside the product sample.

Keep the assortment commercially realistic

Compare box size, carton quantity, target price and the number of variants. Choose a range your customers can understand and your business can support. Use the sample to evaluate the actual experience before finalising the bulk order.
